Theme of 40 Hadith Qudsi

Allah’s Attributes

Many Hadith Qudsi highlight the attributes of Allah. One of the Hadith Qudsi underscores Allah’s mercy as encompassing all things. In this hadith, Allah says that His mercy prevails over His wrath and is always accessible to those who turn back to Him.

On the authority of Hazrat Abu Hurairah (R.A), who said that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:

“When Allah decreed the Creation, He pledged Himself by writing in His book which is laid down with Him: My mercy prevails over my wrath.”  (It was related by Sahih Muslim, also by al-Bukhari, an-Nasa'i, and Ibn Majah).

Importance of Intentions

Several hadith Qudsi emphasize that the intention behind an action is crucial in determining its value, whether it's good or bad. The rewards of a deed will be based on the intentions behind it.

On the authority of Ibn Abbas (R.A), from the Messenger of Allah (SAW), among the sayings He related from His Lord (glorified and exalted be He) is that He said:

“Allah has written down the good deeds and the bad ones. Then He explained it (by saying that) he who has intended a good deed and has not done it, Allah writes it down with Himself as a full good deed, but if he has intended it and has done it, Allah writes it down with Himself as from ten good deeds to seven hundred times, or many times over. But if he has intended a bad deed and has not done it, Allah writes it down with Himself as a full good deed, but if he has intended it and has done it, Allah writes it down as one bad deed.” (It was related by al-Bukhari and Muslim.)

Necessity of Repentance

Repentance for sins is a highly virtuous act in Islam. Allah likes those who repent for their sins. A short hadees Qudsi emphasizes the importance of seeking forgiveness from Allah for sins.

On the authority of Hzarat Anas (R.A), who said:

‘I heard the Messenger of Allah (SAW) say: Allah the Almighty said: O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great as it. ’ (It was related by at-Tirmidhi, also by Ahmad ibn Hanbal. Its chain of authorities is sound.)

Value of Remembering Allah

Allah remembers those who remember Him. Remembering Allah offers immense spiritual and emotional benefits, including tranquility, a softened heart, and a closer connection with the Creator.

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (R.A), who said that the Prophet (SAW) said:

“Allah the Almighty said: I am as my servant thinks of me. I am with him when he makes mention of Me. If he makes mention of Me to himself, I make mention of him to Myself; and if he makes mention of Me in an assembly, I make mention of him in an assembly better than it. And if he draws near to Me an arm's length, I draw near to him a cubit, and if he draws near to Me a cubit, I draw near to him a fathom. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him at speed.” (It was related by al-Buhkari, also by Muslim, at-Tirmidhi and Ibn-Majah)
