What is Dua in Islam?

In Islam, dua is an Arabic word, دُعَاء‎  with means "invocation" in literal translation. Dua is a prayer to call out and is an act of supplication or request asking help or assistance from God. Duʿāʾ is an integral aspect of Islamic worship and spirituality, serving as a direct line of communication between a believer and Allah.

Rabbana Dua Meaning:

The Rabbana Dua meaning entails the true essence of servitude and humility. All Rabbana duas contain the Arabic word Rabbana (رَبَّنَا) which means “our lord”. In the Quran, there are 40 such duas revealed that begin with the Arabic word “Rabbana”.

The verse then follows up by asking Allah for forgiveness, protection, success, victory, wealth, and more. Dua is one of the simplest acts that can show enormous love, dedication, and closeness with our Creator. By including these duas in our everyday life, we maintain a close connection to Allah(SWT) and earn his blessings all day every day.

You can recite this “rabbana taqabbal minna dua'' whenever you want Allah (SWT) to accept whatever good deed you’ve just done. Prophet Ibrahim (AS) recited this dua after building the Kaaba with his son.

Rabbana waj’alnaa muslimaini

رَبَّنَا وَٱجۡعَلۡنَا مُسۡلِمَيۡنِ لَكَ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِنَآ أُمَّةٗ مُّسۡلِمَةٗ لَّكَ وَأَرِنَا مَنَاسِكَنَا      وَتُبۡ عَلَيۡنَآۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلتَّوَّابُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

Rabbana waj’alnaa muslimaini laka wa min zurriyyatinaaa ummatam muslimatal laka wa arinaa manaasikanaa wa tub ‘alainaa innaka antat Tawwaabur Raheem

Translation:

Rabbana waj’alnaa muslimaini is the dua to increase Iman and reinforce your faith in Islam. This is also a way to ask for the success of the entire Muslim Ummah. This is a dua where Prophet Ibrahim asked Allah (SWT) to accept his repentance and to show the rites of our prayers (Pilgrimage – Hajj and Umrah) right after he built Kaaba.

Rabbana Atina

      رَبَّنَآ ءَاتِنَا فِي ٱلدُّنۡيَا حَسَنَةٗ وَفِي ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ حَسَنَةٗ وَقِنَا عَذَابَ ٱلنَّارِ

Pronunciation

Rabbana atina fid Dunya hasanatanw wa fil aakhirati hasanatanw waqinaa azaaban  Naar

Translation

“Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the fire..”

Rabbana Atina fid Duniyais one of the best duas any believer can recite as Dua for goodness in this world and hereafter. It asks for the good in both worlds while also seeking refuge from hellfire. This is a very powerful dua for akhirah protection to include in your daily prayers.

Rabbana afrigh Dua:

رَبَّنَآ أَفۡرِغۡ عَلَيۡنَا صَبۡرٗا وَثَبِّتۡ أَقۡدَامَنَا وَٱنصُرۡنَا عَلَى ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ

Pronunciation:

Rabbana afrigh ‘alainaa sabranw wa sabbit aqdaamanaa wansurnaa ‘alal qawmil kaafireen

Translation:

“Our Lord, pour upon us patience and plant firmly our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people.

This is a dua for power & patience in whatever endeavor or hardship, and to stand victorious. This dua for victory and guidance was first recited by Prophet dawud (AS): Dawud (AS) was a smaller, younger man and on paper it did not seem like he was favored to win a battle against Jalut (goliath).

But we’re told, “and Allah granted him dominion and wisdom, and imparted to him the knowledge of whatever He willed.” (2:251)

Rabbana Tu”aakhiznaa dua:

رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذۡنَآ إِن نَّسِينَآ أَوۡ أَخۡطَأۡنَاۚ

Pronunciation:

Rabbana laa tu’aakhiznaaa in naseenaaa aw akhtaanaa

Translation:

“Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred.

This repentance dua asks for the forgiveness of Allah (SWT) and is the one of the best dua a believer can make. It shows humbleness and servility in our character and protects us from the acts of arrogance or growing prideful.

Repenting constantly is a characteristic trait of a true believer and shows your complete reliance on Allah (SWT) for all things.

Rabbana Isran  Dua

رَبَّنَا وَلَا تَحۡمِلۡ عَلَيۡنَآ إِصۡرٗا كَمَا حَمَلۡتَهُۥ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِنَاۚ

Pronunciation:

Rabbana wa laa tahmil-‘alainaaa isran kamaa    hamaltahoo ‘alal-lazeena min qablinaa

Translation:

“Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us.”

This is a du’a asking Allah (SWT) to make the path of righteousness easy for us (believers). Asking Allah (SWT) to make our tests in life be bearable so we can overcome them. To not be tested more severely than our forefathers or those who walked the path of righteousness before us.

Rabbana Fansurna  Dua;

 رَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلۡنَا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِۦۖ وَٱعۡفُ عَنَّا وَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا وَٱرۡحَمۡنَآۚ أَنتَ مَوۡلَىٰنَا فَٱنصُرۡنَا عَلَى ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ

Pronunciation:

Rabbana wa laa tuhammilnaa maa laa taaqata lanaa bih; wa’fu ‘annaa waghfir lanaa warhamnaa; Anta mawlaanaa fansurnaa ‘alal qawmil kaafireen

Translation

“Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we cannot bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.”

The last ayat of Surah Baqarah alone contains 3 powerful dua for Allah's help which can be recited together or independently. These last 2 ayat are among the most memorized verses of the Qur’an. As it is a complete dua for Allah's mercy in every way.

The Messenger of Allah ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “If anyone recited two verses from the last of Surah Baqarah at night, they will be sufficient for him.”

Rabbana Laa tuzigh Dua

   رَبَّنَا لَا تُزِغۡ قُلُوبَنَا بَعۡدَ إِذۡ هَدَيۡتَنَا وَهَبۡ لَنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحۡمَةًۚ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلۡوَهَّابُ

Pronunciation:

Rabbana laa tuzigh quloobanaa ba’da iz hadaitanaa wa hab lanaa mil ladunka rahmah; innaka antal Wahhaab

Translation

“Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower.”

Another beautiful dua for guidance a believer can recite asking for Allah’s divine guidance.

The believer understands that all things are made possible through the will of Allah (SWT). In this dua, we ask Allah to make us among those who are guided, and to not let the company or circumstances cause our hearts to deviate once we have come to know the truth.

Rabbana yukhliful mee”aadv  Dua

            رَبَّنَآ إِنَّكَ جَامِعُ ٱلنَّاسِ لِيَوْمٍ لَّا رَيْبَ فِيهِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُخْلِفُ ٱلْمِيعَادَ

Pronunciation:

Rabbanaaa innaka jaami ‘un-naasil Yawmil laa raibafeeh; innal laaha laa yukhliful mee’aadV

Translation

"Our Lord, surely You will gather the people for a Day about which there is no doubt. Indeed, Allah does not fail in His promise.”

This is a du’a of believers to reinforce and affirm their faith in the Hereafter. A place where we will either reap the rewards for our good deeds or pay the price of our wrongdoings. “Indeed, Allah does not fail in His promise.”

Rabbana Faghfir lanaa Dua;

                   رَبَّنَآ إِنَّنَآ ءَامَنَّا فَٱغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَقِنَا عَذَابَ ٱلنَّارِ

Pronunciation:

Rabbanaaa innanaaa aamannaa faghfir lanaa zunoobanaa wa qinaa ‘azaaban Naar

Translation

“Our Lord, indeed we have believed, so forgive us our sins and protect us from the punishment of the Fire”

A dua for repentance and protection. We ask Allah (SWT) for forgiveness and to shield us from the punishment of hellfire.

“[Remember] when you were asking the help of your Lord, and He answered you, ‘Indeed, I will reinforce you with a thousand from the angels, following one another.

Rabbana Aamannaa Dua:

رَبَّنَآ ءَامَنَّا بِمَآ أَنزَلۡتَ وَٱتَّبَعۡنَا ٱلرَّسُولَ فَٱكۡتُبۡنَا مَعَ ٱلشَّـٰهِدِينَ

Pronunciation:

Rabbanaaa aamannaa bimaaa anzalta wattaba’nar Rasoola faktubnaa ma’ash shaahideen

Translation

“Our Lord, we have believed in what You revealed and have followed the messenger [i.e., Jesus], register us among the witnesses [to truth].”

Dua for Iman & worship, i.e. to place us among the witnesses to the truth. In the Qur’an, Allah (SWT) tells us how He saved Isa (AS) from the Bani Israel who plotted against him:

“[Mention] when Allah said, “O Jesus, indeed I will take you and raise you to Myself and purify you from those who disbelieve”

Rabbana zunoobanaa Dua

رَبَّنَا ٱغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَإِسْرَافَنَا فِىٓ أَمْرِنَا وَثَبِّتْ أَقْدَامَنَا وَٱنصُرْنَا عَلَى ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ

Pronunciation:

Rabbanagh fir lanaa zunoobanaa wa israafanaa feee amrinaa wa sabbit aqdaamanaa wansurnaa ‘alal qawmil kaafireen

Translation

“Our Lord, forgive us our sins and the excess [committed] in our affairs and plant firmly our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people.”

Dua for repentance, victory, and resiliency. To be steadfast and strong in the face of evil doers.

In the following verse, it says, “So Allah gave them the reward of this world and the good reward of the Hereafter. And Allah loves the doers of good.”

Rabbana azaaban Naar Dua

رَبَّنَا مَا خَلَقْتَ هَٰذَا بَٰطِلًا سُبْحَٰنَكَ فَقِنَا عَذَابَ ٱلنَّارِ

Pronunciation:

Rabbanaa maa khalaqta haaza baatilan Subhaanaka faqinaa ‘azaaban Naar

Translation:

“Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”

It is a Du’a praising Allah (SWT) and then asking for His protection from hellfire. If we take some time to look at the world, we see how complex yet beautifully organized all of Allah’s creations are. We come to believe that nothing was created aimlessly.

There’s a greater purpose that each of His creations has to serve. This supplication in Islam is one of gratitude and shows our appreciation for the beauty in life. The Dua continues by asking Allah (SWT) for protection on the day of Account (Judgement) and that we are saved from the punishment of the fire.

Rabbana innaka man Tudkhilin

رَبَّنَآ إِنَّكَ مَن تُدْخِلِ ٱلنَّارَ فَقَدْ أَخْزَيْتَهُۥ ۖ وَمَا لِلظَّٰلِمِينَ مِنْ أَنصَارٍ

Pronunciation:

Rabbanaaa innaka man tudkhilin Naara faqad akhzai tahoo wa maa lizzaalimeena min ansaar

Translation:

“Our Lord, indeed whoever You admit to the Fire – You have disgraced him, and for the wrongdoers there are no helpers.”

As we reach puberty and consciousness, we’ll start to think about the consequences of our actions. And where we are headed.

The relationship between cause and effect – stands true for our good and bad deeds as well. This Islamic supplication can be used as motivation to remind ourselves of where we’re going because we know the fate of the wrongdoers.

Rabbana Innanaa sami,naa Dua;

رَّبَّنَآ إِنَّنَا سَمِعۡنَا مُنَادِيٗا يُنَادِي لِلۡإِيمَٰنِ أَنۡ ءَامِنُواْ بِرَبِّكُمۡ فَـَٔامَنَّاۚ

Translation:

Our Lord, indeed we have heard a caller, calling to faith, [saying], ‘Believe in your Lord,’ and we have believed.”

Dua for humility, submission, and faith. Saying that we have heard a caller [referring to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)], and we have listened to his message (Tauheed) and believed wholeheartedly.

Rabbana faghfir lanaa Dua;

رَبَّنَا فَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَكَفِّرۡ عَنَّا سَيِّـَٔاتِنَا وَتَوَفَّنَا مَعَ ٱلۡأَبۡرَارِ

Pronunciation:

Rabbanaa faghfir lanaa zunoobanaa wa kaffir ‘annaa saiyi aatina wa tawaffanaa ma’al abraar

Translation :

“Our Lord, so forgive us our sins and remove from us our misdeeds and cause us to die among the righteous.”

A dua for repentance, washing away our misdeeds and asking Allah (SWT) to make us die amongst the ones guided on the right path.

Narrated Ibn Abbas (RA): (One night) I stayed overnight in the house of my aunt Maimuna, and said to myself, “I will watch the prayer of Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم). My Aunt placed a cushion for Allah’ Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم)  and he slept on it in its lengthwise direction and (woke-up) rubbing the traces of sleep off his face and then he recited the last ten Verses of Surah Imran till he finished it.

Rabbana wa aatinaa Dua;

رَبَّنَا وَءَاتِنَا مَا وَعَدتَّنَا عَلَىٰ رُسُلِكَ وَلَا تُخْزِنَا يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ ۗ إِنَّكَ لَا تُخْلِفُ ٱلْمِيعَادَ

Pronunciation:

Rabbanaa wa aatinaa maa wa’attanaa ‘alaa Rusulika wa laa tukhzinaa Yawmal Qiyaamah; innaka laa tukhliful mee’aad

Translation:

“Our Lord, and grant us what You promised us through Your messengers and do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, You do not fail in [Your] promise.”

Du’a of humbleness and reliance on Allah (SWT) for us to be saved from being disgraced on the day of judgment. To a true believer, there is no doubt that Allah (SWT) will indeed fulfill His promise. Rather this is a prayer to Allah (SWT) asking to be worthy of His promise.

Rabbana Faktubnaa dua:

رَبَّنَآ ءَامَنَّا فَٱكْتُبْنَا مَعَ ٱلشَّٰهِدِينَ

Pronunciation:

Rabbana amanna faktubna ma' ash-shahideen

Translation:

“Our Lord, we have believed, so register us among the witnesses.”

This dua is where we declare that we have indeed believed (in Allah) and a request to Allah (SWT) saying that we want to be amongst those witnesses (to the Truth). We are affirming our belief in the Divine message while also saying that May Allah (SWT) grant us a place amongst His believers.

Rabbana khirur raaziqeen  Dua:

رَبَّنَآ أَنزِلْ عَلَيْنَا مَآئِدَةً مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ تَكُونُ لَنَا عِيدًا لِّأَوَّلِنَا وَءَاخِرِنَا وَءَايَةً مِّنكَ ۖ وَٱرْزُقْنَا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلرَّٰزِقِينَ

Pronunciation:

Rabanaaa anzil ‘alainaa maaa’idatam minas samaaa’i takoonu lanaa ‘eedal li awwalinaa wa aakhirinaa wa Aayatam minka warzuqnaa wa Anta khairur raaziqeen

Translation:

“O Allah, our Lord, send down to us a table [spread with food] from heaven to be for us a festival for the first of us and the last of us and a sign from You. And provide for us, and You are the best of providers.”

A Quranic dua for prosperity. Provision is an all-inclusive term meaning to supply with resources, food, money, or a way to make a living. All good provisions are granted by Allah (SWT), we turn to Him and ask Him to provide for us.

This is a dua Prophet Isa (Jesus) alayhis salaam recited asking for sufficient food for him and his followers. Allah (SWT) replies in the following verse,

“Indeed, I will sent it down to you, but whoever disbelieves afterwards from among you - then indeed will I punish him with a punishment by which I have not punished anyone among the worlds."

Rabbana zalamnaa anfusana  Dua;

رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَآ أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلْخَٰسِرِين

Pronunciation:

Rabbanaa zalamnaaa anfusanaa wa illam taghfir lanaa  wa tarhamnaa lanakoonanna minal khaasireen

Translation

“Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.”

This one is a forgiveness Dua asking Allah (SWT) to be merciful and to grant us forgiveness from our sins. We can learn from how Adam (AS) responded after he erred. Being able to admit your faults and having that sense of guilt is a beautiful sign of our faith and dedication to Allah (SWT).

We can learn from this example and recite these words of dua of Adam (AS) for forgiveness as he displayed his guilt in front of Allah. We believe that the imitation of this Prophetic act and words can help us achieve Divine forgiveness and we can avoid repeating the same mistakes.

Rabbana zaalimeen  Dua;

رَبَّنَا لَا تَجۡعَلۡنَا مَعَ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

Pronunciation:

Rabbanaa laa taj’alnaa ma’al qawmiz zaalimeen

Translation:

“Our Lord, do not place us with the wrongdoing people.”

We all know that we tend to inherit the habits of those who we associate with.

In our minds we know that the fate of the wrongdoers will not be pleasant but slowly over time, we may blur the line between good and evil if we continue to spend most of our time amongst such evildoers. It messes with our beliefs and we turn ourselves blind to the reality and consequences of such deeds.

Only when the inevitable is shown to us, do we realize the mistake in our judgment. Alas, it’s too late by then. This du’a asks Allah to protect us from being a victim to that fate.

Rabbana aftah bainana  dua

       رَبَّنَا ٱفۡتَحۡ بَيۡنَنَا وَبَيۡنَ قَوۡمِنَا بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَأَنتَ خَيۡرُ ٱلۡفَٰتِحِينَ

Pronunciation:

Rabbanaf-tah bainana wa baina qawmina bil haqqi wa anta Khairul Fatiheen

Translation

“Our Lord, decide between us and our people in truth, and You are the best of those who give decision.”

Prophet Shuaib (AS) recited this Du’a after facing severe opposition from the prominent (influential) people of the city. They threatened to put him in exile from the city unless he produced (fabricated) a lie against Allah.

His reply? “We would have invented against Allah a lie if we returned to your religion after Allah had saved us from it. And it is not for us to return to it except that Allah, our Lord, should will. Our Lord has encompassed all things in knowledge.”

He then recited this Rabbana dua to put trust in Allah and left matters to His Divine judgment.

Rabbana Alainaa sabranw  Dua

            رَبَّنَآ أَفْرِغْ عَلَيْنَا صَبْرًا وَتَوَفَّنَا مُسْلِمِينَ

Pronunciation:

Rabbanaaa afrigh ‘alainaa sabranw wa tawaffanaa muslimeen

Translation:

“Our Lord, pour upon us patience and let us die as Muslims [in submission to You].”

Du’a for Sabr (patience), perseverance, and a prayer requesting Allah to let us die righteously. This was recited by Prophet Musa (Moses) alayhis salam after Firawn (Pharaoh) resorted to persecution and threatened Musa (AS) after he threw his staff and established the Truth (Divine message) among all those who disbelieved.

Rabbana la taj’alna  Dua;

رَبَّنَا لَا تَجۡعَلۡنَا فِتۡنَةٗ لِّلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ ; وَنَجِّنَا بِرَحۡمَتِكَ مِنَ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ

Pronunciation:

Rabbana la taj’alna fitnatal lil-qawmidh-Dhalimeen ; 86. wa najjina bi- Rahmatika minal qawmil kafireen

Translation:

“Our Lord, pour upon us patience and let us die as Muslims [in submission to You].”

This is a dua for protection that the companions of Musa (AS) recited asking for refuge from evil and unjust people.

It is a dua for success and protection. It asks to not be made objects of torture for disbelieving people. They faced real persecution from the tyrannical Firawn (Pharaoh) and wanted to be a source of goodness in the world.

Rabbana innaka talamu  Dua:

رَبَّنَآ إِنَّكَ تَعْلَمُ مَا نُخْفِى وَمَا نُعْلِنُ ۗ وَمَا يَخْفَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍۢ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ

Pronunciation:

Rabbanaaa innaka ta’lamu maa nukhfee wa maa nu’lin; wa maa yakhfaa ‘alal laahi min shai’in fil ardi wa laa fis samaaa

Translation

“Our Lord, indeed You know what we conceal and what we declare, and nothing is hidden from Allah on the earth or in the heaven.”

This dua shows complete trust and reliance on Allah (SWT). This Dua is a reminder that Allah is All-knowing and All-powerful. That nothing can be hidden from Allah (SWT). He knows the intent behind our actions, whether they be sincere or disingenuous.

Rabbana zurriyyatee Dua:

رَبِّ اجْعَلْنِي مُقِيمَ الصَّلَاةِ وَمِنْ ذُرِّيَّتِي ۚ رَبَّنَا وَتَقَبَّلْ دُعَآءِ‏

Pronunciation:

Rabbij ‘alnee muqeemas Salaati wa min zurriyyatee Rabbanaa wa taqabbal du’aaa

Translation

“My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and [many] from my descendants. Our Lord, and accept my supplication.”

Prophet Ibrahim (AS) knows of the past nations and how they have committed mistakes. So, in this du’a, he asks Allah (SWT) to make us and the future generations to be good Muslims.

More specifically, those who fulfill their obligation of offering their daily prayers. This is a dua during Salat at the end which concludes by asking Allah (SWT) to hear and accept our prayers.

Rabbana yaqoomul hisaab  Dua:

    رَبَّنَا ٱغۡفِرۡ لِي وَلِوَٰلِدَيَّ وَلِلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ يَوۡمَ يَقُومُ ٱلۡحِسَابُ

Pronunciation:

Rabbanagh fir lee wa liwaalidaiya wa lilmu’mineena Yawma yaqoomul hisaab

Translation:

“Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established"

Dua recited by Prophet Ibrahim (AS). This is a dua for forgiveness of parents and yourself

Abu Hurairah (RA) said, “The dead person can be raised a degree after his death. He said, ‘My Lord, how is this?’ He was told, ‘Your child can ask for forgiveness for you.'” (Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 36)

Rabbana Aatinaa mil ladunka  Dua:

This dua is found in Surah Kahf (titled ‘the cave’) and was recited by the young men who ran away from their city fearing persecution for practicing the religion of Truth and found refuge in the cave.

They then turned to their Creator asking for guidance in those tough times and indeed their prayers were answered.

Rabbana innanaa nakhaafu Dua:

رَبَّنَآ إِنَّنَا نَخَافُ أَن يَفْرُطَ عَلَيْنَآ أَوْ أَن يَطْغَى

Pronunciation:

A Dua which both Harun (AS) and Musa (AS) recited: It can be scary to stand up for what is True, to avoid being on the sidelines when we see injustice happening around us.

It wasn’t easy either for Harun (AS) and Musa (AS) who feared Firawn and asked Allah for His divine help. Allah responded in the following verse, “Do not be afraid. I am sure with you both I hear and I see.”

Rabbana khairur raahimeen Dua:

It is a Quranic dua for peace between husband and wife. Qurrata ‘ayin is an old Arabic expression meaning to bring ‘coolness to the eye’, particularly from a spiritual perspective to bring relief, joy, or happiness.

Asking Allah (SWT) to grant us “coolness of the eyes” among our wives and through our children and future generations. To gift us as being a good leader, a role model for the righteous.

“Our Lord is Forgiving and Appreciative”

The Qur’an mentions how this will be the type of dua believers would recite when they enter the Garden of Eden. They will praise Allah (SWT) and thank him endlessly for being forgiving and appreciative.

We are imperfect, we will commit mistakes in our doings and still Allah (SWT) will forgive us and appreciate our efforts to do the little contribution of deeds that we did in our lifetime. We say little because we do not have the capacity or comprehension to do enough and be truly deserving of the divine rewards in Paradise. In this du’a it refers to Allah as Al-Ghafoor and Ash-Shakur, two of His rightful names and attributes.

Rabbana azaabal jaheem Dua

   رَبَّنَا وَسِعۡتَ كُلَّ شَيۡءٖ رَّحۡمَةٗ وَعِلۡمٗا فَٱغۡفِرۡ لِلَّذِينَ تَابُواْ وَٱتَّبَعُواْ سَبِيلَكَ وَقِهِمۡ عَذَابَ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ

Pronunciation:

Rabbanaa wasi’ta kulla shai’ir rahmatanw wa ‘ilman faghfir lillazeena taaboo wattaba’oo sabeelaka wa qihim ‘azaabal Jaheem

Translation:

“Our Lord, You have encompassed all things in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who have repented and followed Your way and protect them from the punishment of Hellfire.

Allah's ( SWT) knowledge and mercy knows no limit. This dua asks Allah (SWT) to be merciful towards all those who believe and to those who have made istagfar dua (repentance) from their Creator.

Rabbana wa  adhkhilhum Dua:

Pronunciation:

Rabbana wa adhkhilhum Jannati ‘adninil-lati wa’attahum wa man salaha min aba’ihim wa azwajihim wa dhuriyyatihim innaka antal ‘Azizul-Hakim, 9. waqihimus saiyi’at wa man taqis-saiyi’ati yawma’idhin faqad rahimatahu wa dhalika huwal fawzul-‘Adheem

Translation

“Our Lord, and admit them to gardens of perpetual residence which You have promised them and whoever was righteous among their forefathers, their spouses and their offspring. Indeed, it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. And protect them from the evil consequences [of their deeds]. And he whom You protect from evil consequences that Day – You will have given him mercy. And that is the great attainment.”

A du’a asking for reunion of believers with their descendants in Jannah (i.e., to be reunited with your forefathers, spouses, and children).

This dua also calls upon Allah (SWT) by using his rightful attributes of being Al-Aziz (the mighty one) and Al-Hakeem (the wise one). Meaning that He holds the power to make it possible.

The du’a concludes by seeking forgiveness from Allah, His mercy, and protection for loved ones on the day of judgment. A dua to protect loved ones from consequences of their mistakes. And indeed His mercy is the best of all gifts.

Rabbana ghillalil lazeena Dua;

رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لَنَا وَلِإِخْوَانِنَا الَّذِينَ سَبَقُونَا بِالْإِيمَانِ وَلَا تَجْعَلْ فِي قُلُوبِنَا غِلًّا لِّلَّذِينَ اٰمَنُوا

Pronunciation:

Rabbanagh fir lanaa wa li ikhwaani nal lazeena sabqoonaa bil eemaani wa laa taj’al fee quloobinaa ghillalil lazeena aamanoo

Translation:

“Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed.”

This dua reflects the attitude we should have for our fellow Muslim brothers and sisters.

Those who “preceded us in faith” would refer to those who embraced Islam before the emigration from Makkah to Yathrib. And all those people who came after and accepted Islam after the migration.

This is a dua for the Muslim Ummah to stand as one and never hold resentment or hatred toward one another. We must continue with love in our hearts for our intellectual nation and resist being jealous of any blessing Allah (SWT) may have bestowed on another person.

Rabbana innaka ra’oofur  Dua

 رَبَّنَآ إِنَّكَ رَءُوفٞ رَّحِيمٌ

Pronunciation:

Rabbannaaa innaka Ra’oofur Raheem

Translation

“Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful.”

A du’a of praise using two of Allah’s rightful names and attributes.

The first one is Ar-Ra’uf meaning the Kind one, the one who is extremely kind and compassionate.

The second is Ar-Raheem meaning the most merciful, the one who acts, with extreme kindness bestowing mercy upon his creations.

Rabbana ‘alaika tawakkalnaa Dua:

رَّبَّنَا عَلَيۡكَ تَوَكَّلۡنَا وَإِلَيۡكَ أَنَبۡنَا وَإِلَيۡكَ ٱلۡمَصِيرُ

Pronunciation:

Rabbanaa ‘alaika tawakkalnaa wa ilaika anabnaa wa ilaikal maseer

Translation:

“Our Lord, upon You we have relied on, and to You, we have returned, and to You is the destination.”

As a true believer, we show absolute trust and reliance on Allah’s (SWT) judgment in all matters. The importance of this Quranic dua affirms that we have relied on Him alone. Furthermore, it is also a prayer of remembrance that this life is only temporary. The final eternal residence and destination is when we return to Allah (SWT).

Rabbana laa taj’alnaa  Dua;

رَبَّنَا لَا تَجۡعَلۡنَا فِتۡنَةٗ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ وَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا رَبَّنَآۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلۡحَكِيمُ

Pronunciation:

Rabbana laa taj’alnaa fitnatal lillazeena kafaroo waghfir lanaa rabbanaaa innaka antal azeezul hakeem

Translation:

“Our Lord, make us not [objects of] torment for the disbelievers and forgive us, our Lord. Indeed, it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.”

Prophet Ibrahim (AS) recited this dua for victory over the disbelievers. To not make us “objects of torment” meaning if the disbelievers win, they would be in a delusional state where they would assume what they followed was correct.

They would raise doubts about how Allah (SWT) would allow his believers to lose. The du’a then continues referring to Allah (SWT) as “Azeezul Hakeem” meaning the most powerful and wise.

Rabbana Atmim lanaa  Dua:

رَبَّنَآ أَتۡمِمۡ لَنَا نُورَنَا وَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَآۖ إِنَّكَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيۡءٖ قَدِيرٞ

Pronunciation:

Rabbanaaa atmim lanaa nooranaa waghfir lana innaka ‘alaa kulli shai’in qadeer

Translation:

“Our Lord, perfect for us our light and forgive us. Indeed, You are overall things competent.”

We learn in Surah Al-Hadid verse 12 how on the day of judgment the believing men and women will have a light emitting from their right hands. They will be told, “A good tidying for you today.” The hypocrites will find themselves stumbling in darkness.

This du’a asks Allah (SWT) to complete our light on that day and to forgive us our sins. Indeed, Allah (SWT) is competent and powerful over all things.
