What is Kalma?

The word kalma or “qalma” is an Arabic word that means “word”. In South Asian Muslim doctrine, kalmas are the combination of different supplications and prayers based on hadiths. These have been formulated and compiled to facilitate easy memorizing and learning of Aqeedah (belief). Because South Asian Muslims such as Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh can't speak Arabic, it is the easiest way to articulate and teach the basic concept of Islam to their offspring. There are Six Kalmas formulated by Islamic scholars.

kalima 5 in the light of Hadiths

Many Hadiths narrate the importance of kalima 5. Although the whole kalma is not mentioned in Hadith, the main theme and importance of seeking forgiveness are mentioned in many Hadiths.

In a hadith (Musnad Aḥmad 2234) narrated by Ibn Abbas (R.A), the Prophet (SAW) said that;

(Musnad Aḥmad 2234)

“Whoever increases his prayers for forgiveness, Allah will grant him relief from every worry, a way out from every hardship, and provide for him in ways he does not expect.”

In another Hadith (Sahih al-Bukhari 6307), Hazrat Abu Hurairah (R.A) narrates that Muhammad (SAW) said;

وَاللَّهِ إِنِّي لَأَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ فِي اليَوْمِ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ سَبْعِينَ مَرَّةً

“By Allah! I ask for forgiveness from Allah and turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times a day.”

When and where to recite the kalma 5

Kalma 5 incorporates the powerful prayer for seeking pardon of our sins from Allah. A good believer always pleads pardon for his wrongdoings. Kalma 5 should be recited constantly irrespective of time and place. Regular recitation of fifth kalma washes away all forms of sin, purifies the soul, and refreshes the mind. The best occasion to recite dua Astaghfar is when you feel regret for your past sins and wrongdoings. According to Hadiths, “whoever reads Astagfaar on Friday before Fajr prayer then Allah Almighty forgives his sins, even if the sins are as many as the foam of the ocean.”

How many times to recite five kalma

Allah has uncountable blessings on us. His remembrance (zikr) should also be uncountable. But, due to our business and oblivion, we can't recite the duas all the time. Islam does not compel us to do dhikr all the time. We should recite five kalma and all other supplicants regularly. Reciting Astaghfar 100 times a day found in Hadith (Sahih Muslim, hadith: (6799). In another Hadith Prophet (SAW) says; “I seek forgiveness more than 70 times a day”. So, We can practice either of the two.
