Alhamdulillah Subhanallah Allahu Akbar

Alhamdulillah, SubhanAllah, and Allahu Akbar are Arabic phrases with high significance in Islam. These expressions convey praise, glorification, and admiration of Allah’s greatness. Alhamdulillah means ‘All praise is due to Allah,’ SubhanAllah means ‘Glory be to Allah,’ and Allahu Akbar means ‘Allah is the Greatest.’

Alhamdulillah, Subhanallah, and Allahu Akbar hold deep spiritual significance and are recited by Muslims multiple times a day. We will explain the meaning of these divine phrases.

Alhamdulillah ( ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ)

The term ‘Alhamdulillah’ (ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ) means ‘all praises belong to Allah.’ It is a form of gratitude and praise for Allah. This phrase acknowledges that all good things come from Allah and expresses thankfulness for His blessings.     

Allahu Akbar (الله أكبر)

Allah Akbar (الله أكبر) means ‘Allah is the greatest of all’. It signifies that Allah is the greatest and the most powerful. It is a declaration of Allah's supreme majesty and sovereignty. Allahu Akbar is also known as the ‘Takbir’ and is a central part of Islamic worship and expression of faith. 

Subhanallah (سبحان الله)

Subhanallah  (سبحان الله) means ‘glory to Allah.’ It expresses the purity and perfection of Allah, declaring that Allah is free from any imperfection, limitations, or fault. Subhanallah meaning in simple terms, is ‘ Allah is all perfect in an absolute sense.’

Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, Allahuakbar as Dhikr in Islam 

In Islam, certain supplications and phrases are memorized and recited to remind oneself of Allah regularly, known as Dhikr (Zikr). ‘Subhanallah,’ ‘Alhamdulillah,’ and ‘Allahuakbar’ are some of the famous dhikrs. Muslims regularly supplicate these phrases. 

The recommended practice is to recite "SubhanAllah" (سُبْحَانَ ٱللَّٰهِ) 33 times, "Alhamdulillah" (ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّٰهِ) 33 times, and "Allahu Akbar" (ٱللَّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ) 34 times, totaling 100, after each obligatory prayer. 

The Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is reported to have taught this practice to his beloved daughter Hazrat Fatima (R.A). Therefore, reciting Subhanallah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, and Allahu Akbar 34 times is known as Zikr Fatima (R.A), or Zikr Fatimi. 

Hazrat Ali (R.A) narrates that; 

“Fatima (R.A) came to the Prophet (SAW) asking for a servant. He said, "May I inform you of something better than that? When you go to bed, recite "Subhan Allah' thirty-three times, 'Al Hamdulillah' thirty-three times, and 'Allahu Akbar' thirty-four times. Hazrat Ali (R.A) added, 'I have never failed to recite it ever since.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5362)

Importance of Saying Subhanallah, Al-Hamdulillah, and Allahuakbar 

The remembrance of Allah (dhikr) has high value in Islam. It offers numerous spiritual and practical benefits, fostering a deeper connection with Allah and bringing blessings into the lives of believers.  

According to the Hadiths, reciting ‘SubhanAllah,’ ‘Alhamdulillah,’ and ‘Allahu Akbar’ holds significant importance in Islam. These phrases are highly regarded for their ability to bring blessings, forgiveness, and spiritual elevation.

Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A) narrates that the Messenger of Allah said;

If anyone extols Allah after every prayer thirty-three times, praises Allah thirty-three times, and declares His Greatness thirty-three times, ninety-nine times in all, and says to complete a hundred:" There is no god but Allah, having no partner with Him, to Him belongs sovereignty and to Him is praise due, and He is Potent over everything," his sins will be forgiven even If these are as abundant as the foam of the sea. (Sahih Muslim 597)

Hazrat Ibn Masud (R.A) narrates that the Messenger of Allah PBUH) said;

“I met Hazrat Ibrahim (A.S) on the night of my ascent, so He said: ‘O Muhammad (SAW), recite Salam from me to your nation, and inform them that Paradise has pure soil and delicious water and that it is a flat treeless plain, and that its seeds are: “Glory is to Allah (Subhann Allah), all praise is due to Allah (Al-ḥamdulillah) and ‘none has the right to be worshipped but Allah’ (Laa Ilaha Illallah), and Allah is the greatest (Allahu Akbar).” (Jami at-Tirmidhi 3462)

HBenefits of Reciting Al-hamdulillah Subhanallah Allahu Akbar

Supplications and dhikr have several spiritual and worldly benefits. Therefore, it is highly encouraged to recite them regularly. Some of the benefits of reciting Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar, and Subhanallah are mentioned here.

Forgiveness of Sins

These divine phrases serve as a way to forgive sins. When recited with sincerity, it can lead to the forgiveness of sins, even those equal to the foam of the sea.

Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A) narrates that the Messenger of Allah said;

If anyone extols Allah after every prayer thirty-three times, praises Allah thirty-three times, and declares His Greatness thirty-three times, ninety-nine times in all, and says to complete a hundred:" his sins will be forgiven even if these are as abundant as the foam of the sea. ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَطْمَئِنُّ قُلُوبُهُم بِذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ ۗ أَلَا بِذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ ٱلْقُلُوبُ 

“Those who believe and whose hearts find comfort in the remembrance of Allah. Surely in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find comfort.” (Ar-Rum: 28)

Reward in the Hereafter

Each recitation is a form of worship that earns rewards from Allah, contributing to one's success in the afterlife. The recitation of Allahu Akbar, Subhanallah, and Alhamdulillah leads to success in the life hereafter. 

It is narrated from Hazrat Numan bin Bashir (R.A) that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: 

"What you mention of the glory of Allah, of Tasbih (Subhan-Allah), Tahlil (Allahu-Akbar), and Tahmid (Al-HamduLillah), revolves around the Throne, buzzing like bees, reminding of the one who said it. Wouldn't any one of you like to have, or continue to have, something that reminds you of him (in the presence of Allah)?' (sunan ibn majah 3809)

Strength and Energy

Some narrations suggest that regularly reciting these phrases can provide physical and spiritual strength.
