Explanation of Kullu Nafsin Zaikatul Maut Verse

Death is the ultimate truth. It is predetermined and the termination of worldly life. With death, the soul of an individual is separated from the body, starting life hereafter. In the Islamic concept, life has three interconnected stages. The first stage is the world of matter in which humans exist with body and soul. The second stage is the world of Barzakh, the world of souls. The third stage is the world hereafter in which the souls will be reunited with the worldly body.

Let’s explain Kullu Nafsin Zaikatul Maut verse.

Kullu Nafsin

The phrase Kullu Nafsin كُلُّ نَفْسٍ in this ayat means all souls or all living things in this world who must face death. Scholars differ on the subject of Angels whether they will face death or not. One school of scholars comments that all living things either from the earth or skies, will face death. Other scholars maintain that Angels, Hoors, and Ghilman (servant boys provided for believers in heaven) are excluded from the taste of death.

Zaikatul Maut

Zaikatul Maut ذَائِقَةُ الْمَوْتِ means the tase of death. It is obvious that the way the body and soul are conjoined together their separation should entail some pain. Hazrat Abu Hurairah R.A narrates a Hadith that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:

"Increase in remembrance of the severer of pleasures." Meaning death.  (Jamia Tirmidhi 2307)

Lessons Of Quran Verses About Death

The holy Quran is the book of salvation. There are several Quran verses about death delivering worthy lessons to human beings.

Kullu Nafsin Zaikatul Maut Verse and the Lessons Of Quran Verses About Death

Allah Is The Eternal

The first and foremost lesson of Kullu Nafsin Zaikatul Maut Ayat is that the world is nothing but a beautiful lie. Everything in this world is a delusion. All living beings are destined to perish. Allah is eternal, He will remain forever. The Holy Quran declares that;

كُلُّ مَنْ عَلَیْهَا فَانٍ,وَّ یَبْقٰى وَجْهُ رَبِّكَ ذُو الْجَلٰلِ وَ الْاِكْرَامِ

“Every being on earth is bound to perish. Only your Lord Himself, full of Majesty and Honour, will remain forever” (55:26-27)

This World Is Mortal

We observe the occurrence of different phenomena on a daily basis. The sun rises and sets, the weather becomes hot and overcome by chilling, people are born and die, and trees turn pale yellow from lush green. All these are signs of mortality of living beings, that Allah created to convey to us that we all are going to perish. Kullu Nafsin ayat in Quran reiterates the inevitability mortality of in this material world.

Ultimately, with the throes of death will come the truth. This is what you were trying to escape! (50:19)

The Real Destination is Hereafter

This world is a place of test and examination. The real world is the hereafter that will be held after death. Allah says in the Holy Quran;

And who believe in what has been revealed to you and what has been revealed before you, and they have faith in the Hereafter. (2:4)

The life in the hereafter will either be in paradise or hell depending on the deeds committed in this world. The virtuous and righteous will be rewarded in paradise and the sinner will be punished.

Worldly Love Is Delusion

We all know well that death will leave everything behind. Our belongings, assets, loved ones, and everything will be detached. This is what the holy Quran says;

This worldly life is no more than play and amusement. But the Hereafter is indeed the real life, if only they knew. (29:64)

 Worldly love is not only a delusion but also distracts us and keeps us oblivious to death and accountability. The love of the world and fear of death is the root of evil as mentioned in Hadith.

Hazrat Soban R.A. narrates a Hadith on this account. The Prophet (SAW) said:

“The people will soon summon one another to attack you as people when eating invite others to share their dish. Someone asked: Will that be because of our small numbers at that time? He replied: No, you will be numerous at that time: but you will be scum and rubbish like that carried down by a torrent, and Allah will take fear of you from the breasts of your enemy and last enervation into your hearts. Someone asked: What is wahn (enervation)? Messenger of Allah (PBUH): He replied: Love of the world and dislike of death”. (Sunan Abi Dawud 4297)

Conclusion

Kullu Nafsin Zaikatul Maut is a powerful verse of the Holy Quran to awaken the conscience of human beings to return to the creator. It reiterates the eternity of Allah and the mortality of this world and its inhabitants. Believers should read and memorize this verse as a reminder of death that they could not waste time in the delusion of this material world.
