What Is a Hafiz?- Understanding Hafiz Meaning

Before going to the benefits and virtues of the memorization of the Quran let us know what is Hafiz.

The word Hafiz(حافظ) is derived from the Arabic word Hifz (حفظ)which means ‘to memorize’. Hafiz meaning, in a literary sense, is the one who memorizes.  But the hafiz meaning in Islam is the person who memorizes the whole Quran by heart. Hafiz's female equivalent is Hafiza.

So, the male who memorized the Quran is called the Hafiz e Quran, and the female who gets this blessing is known as the Hafiza Quran

Tarteel Quran

Tarteel Quran is one of the main aspects of reciting it. “Tarteel” is the Arabic word that is translated as "slow, measured rhythmic tones". This term is commonly used for the recitation of the Quran in proper order, rhythmically, and with no haste. In Quran Allah says;

أَوْ زِدْ عَلَيْهِ وَرَتِّلِ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ تَرْتِيلًا ( Al-muzammil:4)

“Or a little more—and recite the Quran properly in a measured way.” ( Al-muzammil:4)

Purpose of Memorizing The Entire Quran

The Quran is the divine revelation, and blessed are those who memorize the entire Quran. Allah has preserved this Book till the Day of Judgment. Allah says in the Holy Quran.

إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا ٱلذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَـٰفِظُونَ  (15:9)

It is certainly We Who have revealed the Reminder, and it is certainly We Who will preserve it. (15:9)

The main purpose of memorizing the entire Quran is to transfer it to our future generations completely and safely. Its memorization guarantees that every word, verse, and chapter of the Holy Book is preserved accurately, preventing it from loss or changes over time. Memorization of the Holy Quran is the continuation of the sacred tradition that started with the Prophet (SAW) memorizing the  Holy Quran to His companions and goes on till now.

Significance of Memorizing Quran

The Quran is the book revealed by Allah on His beloved Prophet (SAW). Allah has promised the divine rewards for memorizing Quran. Its remembrance aids in understanding the spirit of the Quran and grasping its message deeply. Each word of the Quran guides one's actions and thoughts in daily life. إِنَّا جَعَلۡنَٰهُ قُرۡءَٰنًا عَرَبِيّٗا لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ (43:3)

"Certainly, We have made it a Quran in Arabic so perhaps you will understand." (43:3)

There are many verses in the Holy Quran that strongly encourage the memorization of this divine revelation. In another place in the Quaran Allah Almighty says;

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍۢ  (54:17)

And We have certainly made the Quran easy to remember. So is there anyone who will be mindful?”(54:17)

These two verses of the Quran signify the memorization and comprehension of the Quran.
