Reasons for Revelation of Surah Aal e Imran

The Surah Aal e Imran consists of many discourses which are revealed at different periods of time. The major part of the chapter is revealed after Muslims migrated to Madina and faced difficulties and cruelties from the enemy. During this time, the believers fought the Ghazwa e Badr and outnumbered the disbelievers. To take revenge for the defeat, they attacked Muslims once again, and the battle of Uhud occurred.

Some part of Surah al e Imran is revealed in response to the Christian delegation of Najran who visited the Holy Prophet (SAW). The delegation, including chiefs and scholars, was seeking to understand His Prophethood and engage in theological discussion. They discussed doctrines, including the nature of God and Jesus, and the Prophet (SAW) responded by reciting verses from the Quran.

Themes and Subjects of Surah Al Imran

Surah Al Imran is one of the longest surahs of the Quran. It consists of many discourses. The discourses are highly interlinked in their theme, aim, and objectives. We will elaborate on the theme and subject matter of the Imran Surah of the Quran.

Themes and Subjects of Surah Al Imran

Attributes of Allah

Surat al Imran begins with the attributes of Allah. In the second verse of this chapter, two beautiful names of Allah are mentioned- Hayyu ( اَلحَیُّ ) and Qayyum (قَيُّوم). Al Hayyu means ‘ever living’, and Al Qayyum means "The Self-Subsisting, The Self-Existing". The starting verses of Surah Al-Imran highlight the attribute of Allah being the only worthy of worship. The Quran says;

 اللّٰهُ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَۙ-الْحَیُّ الْقَیُّوْمُ

Allah! There is no god worthy of worship except Him—the Ever-Living, All-Sustaining. (3:2)

The Books

The verses Suratul al Imran prove the truthfulness of the Holy Quran. In the Quran, Allah says that He has revealed this book for the guidance of people, and it confirms and testifies to the earlier holy books, torah and Injeel, that were revealed to Hazrat Musa A.S. and Hazrat Issa A.S., but the people changed the book with time. Those who deny the message of Allah deserve a severe chastisement.

The Family of Imran

The story of the Family of Imran is mentioned in this chapter, and it is the reason behind the name of Surah Ale Imran. The Imran's family in the Quran refers to the family of Hazrat Maryam A.S. and Hazrat Issa A.S. Allah has dignified this family. Hazrat Imran is the father of Hazrat Maryam A.S,. When Hannah (the wife of Imran) prayed to the Lord for a pious child, Allah gave her Hazrat Maryam A.S. She grew up under the supervision of Hazrat Zakariya A.S.

A time came when Allah gave Mary the glad tidings of Hazrat Issa A.S. On the question of Mary, “How shall I have a son when no man has ever touched me?” The angel answered: Thus shall it be. Allah creates whatever He wills. When He decides something, He merely says: "Be" and it is.

Lessons from the Battle of Badr and Uhud

The Sura al Imran reflects upon the victories and challenges of the Battles of Badr and Uhud. It underscores the necessity of obedience to Allah, discipline, and unity. The muslims faced setbacks at the Battle of Uhud. It is attributed to disobedience and oblivion, emphasizing the unity and serving as a lesson for the community.

Reflection on Creation

Surah al Imran last 10 ayat explicitly elaborate on the creation of the universe. Al-Imran 190 urges believers to reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of night and day, as signs of Allah's greatness.

Along with the creations of Allah, these verses highlight the need for constant remembrance of Allah, seeking His forgiveness, and steadfastness in faith, even in adversity.
