Theme and Subject Matters of Surat Humaza

Surat Humaza is a short chapter of the holy Quran and instilled with the divine wisdom in each verse. The theme and subject matters highlighted in this chapter are discussed here.

Theme and subject of Surat humazah

Humaza and Lumazah

The words Humazah (هُمَزَةٍ ) and Lumazah (لُّمَزَةِ ) appear in the first verse of this chapter. These two words in Arabic have closer meanings. The word Humazah refers to backbiting or insulting someone behind their back. Lumazah refers to insulting someone in front of them. These two traits are considered an evil in Islam.

In Al Humazah Surah, Allah Almighty condemns people with both of these traits, and who used to slander, mock, and backbite about the Holy Prophet (SAW) and his companions. In this chapter, Allah promises a severe chastisement for them.

The Hoarders

The second verse of the Humazah Surah (104:2) mentions the people who accumulate wealth and count it. Allah also highlights the illusion that their wealth will make them immortal. In reality, they will be thrown into the crushing fire.

The Fire of Allah

The sixth verse of this chapter refers to the fire of Allah. نَارُ اللّٰهِ الْمُوْقَدَةُ in 104:6 means the fire kindled by Allah. Surah al Humza is the only chapter in the Quran in which hell fire is named as the fire of Allah. It shows the severity of chastisement into which the hoarders and slander will be hurled. This fire is incomparable.
