Overview Of Surah e Mulk

Surah e Mulk is a Makki Surah. As the name indicates, it was revealed in the holy city of Makkah (use the same spelling for city or place) before the prophet migrated to Madinah. Here is a quick overview of the Surah:

Surah Mulk Meaning

To clearly understand and avail the guidance of Surah al Mulk, we are discussing the literal meanings of Surah Mulk. The word mulk means Sovereignty, Kingdom, or Dominion. As the name Surah al Mulk suggests, the universe is the Almighty’s kingdom. He is the only ruler, creator, and administrator of the universe. As indicated by the first verse of this Surah:

تَبَـٰرَكَ ٱلَّذِى بِيَدِهِ ٱلْمُلْكُ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ قَدِيرٌ ١

“Blessed is He in whose hand is the dominion, and He is over all things competent”
(Ayat:01, Surah:67, Para:29)

Reasons Behind Revealing Surah Tabarak

This Surah was revealed for the people who didn’t believe that Allah is the Sole Creator of the whole world and all power belongs to Him.

Context

Surah Tabarak was revealed in Mecca as a response to the disbelievers who were not sure about the day of judgment and wished for the disastrous ending of the Holy Prophet (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) and His counterparts. This surah was revealed to remind mankind about;

• The Oneness of Allah.
• Absolute Power over the Universe.
• Clarify the concepts of ‘’Self-Accountability’’.

Mulk Surah Background

Mulk Surah reminds human beings about the Divine power of the creator who has created the flawless universe. Allah Almighty has mentioned his blessings in this Surah to remind human beings that they must be thankful to Allah.

مَّا تَرَىٰ فِى خَلْقِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ مِن تَفَـٰوُتٍۢ ۖ فَٱرْجِعِ ٱلْبَصَرَ هَلْ تَرَىٰ مِن فُطُورٍۢ ٣

You do not see in the creation of the Most Merciful any fault.
(Ayat:3, Surah:67 )

In this surah, Allah narrates that he has created the earth for the benefit of human beings so that they can eat from it and remain grateful to Allah. He has created human beings’ eyes, ears, and nose so that they must use these organs to identify the magnificent power of Allah.

قُلْ هُوَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنشَأَكُمْ وَجَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلسَّمْعَ وَٱلْأَبْصَـٰرَ وَٱلْأَفْـِٔدَةَ ۖ قَلِيلًۭا مَّا تَشْكُرُونَ ٢٣

Say, “It is He who has produced you and made for you hearing and vision and hearts; little are you grateful.”
(Ayat:23, Surah:67, Para:29)

He lifts the birds in the air when they fly. He is the one Who allows the water to flow again when it sinks.

قُلْ اَرَءَیْتُمْ اِنْ اَصْبَحَ مَآؤُكُمْ غَوْرًا فَمَنْ یَّاْتِیْكُمْ بِمَآءٍ مَّعِیْنٍ

Say, “Have you considered: if your water was to become sunken [into the earth], then who could bring you flowing water?”
(Ayah:30, Surah 67, para 29)

Allah has mentioned all of these blessings in Al Mulk Surah so that human beings use these hints to recognize that He (Allah) is the only creator of this world. We should be thankful to Him for all of His blessings.

Surah Mulk Benefits

It has been proven from different Hadith [Sayings of the Holy Prophet (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ)] that whoever reads Sourat Al Moulk will get lots of Spiritual as well as Eternal benefits.
Jabir (R.A) said

“ The prophet (PBUH) would not sleep until He recited surah Alif laam meem Tanzeel (Surah Sajdah) and surah Tabarak (Sura Mulk).
(Jamia-Tirmidhi Hadith: 2892).

Self-Reflection

Surat AlMulk invites us to reflect on our creation of eyes, ears, and noses and makes us think about whether we are grateful for these blessings or not. The creation of human beings connects them to the creator. No one else can create a human being with such refined features and perfection except Allah.

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْاِنْسَانَ فِیْۤ اَحْسَنِ تَقْوِیْمٍ

“We have certainly created man in the best of stature”
(Surah Tin verse 04)

Be Thankful

Mulk Surah invites readers to praise Almighty Allah by witnessing His blessings present in this world without being ungracious. No reward will be given by Allah to ungrateful people and disbelievers. Allah Almighty has emphasized being thankful in Surah Ibrahim as well.

وَ اِذْ تَاَذَّنَ رَبُّكُمْ لَىٕنْ شَكَرْتُمْ لَاَزِیْدَنَّكُمْ وَ لَىٕنْ كَفَرْتُمْ اِنَّ عَذَابِیْ لَشَدِیْدٌ

“If you are grateful, I will certainly give you more. But if you are ungrateful, surely my punishment is severe”
(Surah Ibrahim verse 07).

Provides peace after death

Once a Companion of the Prophet (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) pitched a tent on the grave while being unaware of the fact that it was a burying place. Suddenly, he heard the voice of Surah Mulq’s recitation coming from the grave. He went back to the Holy Prophet (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) and narrated the whole incident. Prophet(صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) said,

“It (Surah Al Mulk) is a protector; a rescuer; saving from the chastisement of the grave”(Jami` at-Tirmidhi, Vol 5, Book 42, hadith 2890).

Source of forgiveness of your sins

Recitation of Surah e Mulk full can lead to forgiveness of our sins and help us to enter paradise.
Prophet (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) said,

A Surah(chapter) of the Quran containing thirty (30) verses will intercede its reader till he is forgiven. That is “Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the dominion(Ayah 1, surah 67)” (Abu-Dawood, Hadith:1400)

Its recitation is a source of reward from Almighty Allah. Prophet (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) said,

“Recite the Quran as it will intercede on the day of judgment for its companions”(Muslim).
This Hadees gives us the motivation to be habitual in reciting the Quran daily.

Requests Salvation from Allah

This Surah requests salvation from Allah SWT for its punctual reciter till Allah decides to erase all his sins. The Prophet (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) said:

“It is a prevention, it is a salvation delivering from the punishment of the grave.” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2890)(Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book of Virtues Of The Qur’an Hadith 2890)
