What Is Taraweeh?

What is taraweeh? Well, Taraweeh is one of the night prayers also known as “Qiyaam-ul-Layl”. This is the Sunnah of Beloved Prophet Muhammad(SAW) and is called “Sunnat-e-Mo’aqqidah” – The Sunnah that is near to obligation and is very rewarding if offered, if skipped there is no retribution for it.

Muslims offer tarawih prayer in the sacred month of Ramazan as it reflects the whole message of “Al-Quran”. It is offered between “Isha” and “Witr” prayers. It can be offered in the “Masjid” or at home also. But, offering it in a Masjid is much more rewarding and practiced Sunnah also.

Taraweeh Meaning & Its Origin

The word “Taraweeh” is an Arabic word that means “To do rest or to relax”. It meant so because of the forefathers who used to rest after every tarawih rakat while offering this prayer. The “meaning of taraweeh explains that these prayers can be offered till midnight. There is no pact limitation from Almighty Allah about its offering time.

The origin of “Tarawih prayer” shows that it was first performed by the Prophet Muhammad(S.A.W) in the last year of His life. It has been narrated by Hazrat Ayesha(R.A) that;

“The Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, went out on the night of the middle of the night, He prayed in the Masjid, and the men joined him, so the people got up and started talking, so more of them gathered together and started talking with him. On the third night, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, went out for the first time in his prayers. But on the fourth night, the Masjid was unable to be used by its people, until he went out for the Fajr prayer. But I am afraid that it will be imposed on you and you will not be able to do it. Then the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, died and the command was on that.”
(Sahih Al-Bukhari, Number of Hadith: 2012. Vol: 3, P: 45, I: Dartuq al-NajatAfter this, “Tarawih” was practiced again in congregations in the Masajids under the command of Hazrat Umar ibn al-Khattab(R.A) – One of the companions of Hazrat Muhammad(SAW) and the one who knows about Islam and implemented Islam in a way like no one other did before!
