Salaam Meaning in English

“Salaam” is an Arabic word that means “peace” and is the Assalamualaikum short form . It comes from the same origin from, the word “Islam” is derived. The correct form of Salam is “Asalam O Alikum” (ٱلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ) in which Alaikum is composed of the prefix “Ala” and suffix. “Ala” basically means “On” but when it is combined with the suffix “kum” its meaning becomes “upon you”.

The word “wa” means “and”, “Alaikum” means “on you”, and “as-salaam” means “the peace”. So the pharse “Walaikum assalam” means “And peace be upon you too”. Anas(R.A) reported that the Companions of Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon him) said to him: The People.of the Book offer us salutations (by saying as-Salamu- ‘Alaikum). How should we reciprocate them ? Thereupon he said: Say: Wa ‘Alaikum (and upon you too).

This phrase is composed of many words, “Walaikum salam” means “peace be upon you too”, “wa” means “and”, “Rahmatullahi” means “ Mercy”, and “Brakatullah” means “blessings”. So, the complete meaning of this phrase is “peace be upon you too, Allah’s mercy, and blessings”.

Basically this phrase is the longer form of the “Walaikum assalam” and “walaikum assalam rahmatullahi barakatuh” which means “And peace be upon you too” and “And peace be upon you too and His mercy” respectively. The longer version just includes a few more blessings.
